2017 Hoops

Postby lfnadmin » Fri Jun 17, 2016 2:09 pm

Forgive me, just wanted especially to get hoops discussion started here.

What are the tiers for next year's season predictions? Think that Holy Cross, Lehigh, Bucknell need to be in 1st tier, but not sure where everyone else lies. American U. is particularly hard to place. They could be anywhere from 1st tier to bottom 4.

As for the projections of my team, BU definitely will be projected as a top 3 team with a real chance to win the league with 8-9 upperclassmen. BU finished third last year and graduated Papale (SG) and Dieudonne (PF) but gets back starter Justin Alston (C) and former first team all league Cedric Hankerson (SG) from season-ending injuries last year. Hankerson will be paired with another first team all league player in Fanning and will form the most athletic 2/3 scoring threat in the league this year. BU will also have Kyle Foreman (all-rookie team) at point.

Projected starting line-up:
1 - Foreman
2/3 - Hankerson
2/3- Fanning
4 - Havener
5 - Alston

Key Reserves:
1 - Johnson
2/3 - Mosely
5 - Mbargorba

Sorta surprised to see Mbargorba isn't in your starting 5. Seems like we saw flashes from him last season.

Mbargorba definitely showed flashes and he is the the only real rim-protector that we have but he often gets way out of position and is very underwhelming on the boards because of it. In addition, he just really isn't as polished as Alston is offensively.

AU will be, IMHO, in the middle of the pack, with a chance to get into the top four by season's end, depending on the development of our incoming freshman point guard, Sa'eed Nelson. Nelson led his Atlantic City HS team, St. Augustine, to its best season in school history, posting a 30-2 mark and winning the state championship in its division. But it will certainly take him some time to adjust to the physicality of the college game and to the demands of the Princeton offense.

The Eagles will have to replace leading scorer Jesse Reed, a second team all-Patriot League player last season. The leading and clear candidate to do so is sophomore Delante Jones, the PL's Rookie of the Year last season. Jones really came on during conference play, including making a game-winning lineup to defeat Holy Cross on the road, and won Rookie of the Week honors three times. He's likely to be joined in the starting lineup by senior Charlie Jones, who does a little bit of everything for the Eagles, and who could be anywhere in the lineup from shooting guard to power forward. The other three starting spots are up in the air, though I expect senior guard Jalen Rhea to earn the starting two guard spot. Senior Paris Maragkos started most of last season at center, but he'll be pushed by sophomore Andrija Matic and/or incoming freshman center Mark Gasperini, whom our coaches are very high on and was our top recruiting priority last season.

At the point, sophomore James Washington, who started most of last season, will be pushed by Nelson. Sophomore swing Lonnie Rivera and senior forward Leon Tolksdorf will also push for minutes.

I expect AU to struggle early until we get settled at the point, but then come on during PL play. Coach Brennan has had us playing good basketball at the end of the season in each of his first three years as coach, and I expect nothing different this year.
